Where I get my books

Living in Paris it has been hard to find English books but I have managed. Here is a list of where I get all my books.

Paris:
The Abbey Bookshop
I have recently found The Abbey Bookshop in Paris. It is a Canadian bookshop, tucked away in the center of Paris (Metro: Saint Michel Notre Dame) and it is stuffed with books, from the floor to the ceiling and there are too many that the owner has to put some outside! The owner, Brian Spence, is very nice and speaks both French and English and is happy to give you any information on any book in his store. There is a kids/tween/teen book section (new and used) at the back of the store that is stuffed with amazing books. The rest of the store and basement is just piles and piles and books stacked very high, to the celling.  See: www.alevdesign.com/abbey/abbey_en.html or follow them on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Abbey-Bookshop/19922251361

Shakespeare & Co.
I have found Shakespeare & Co. It is an English bookstore which was home to authors when they were writing books and had no home. It has a variety of great kid, tween, teen and adult books. The bookstore has used and new books to buy. Upstairs, in the kid/tween/teen corner there is a corner to sit in which is as big as a couch. Around it, there is a mirror which is covered in notes from all the people that visited the bookstore. I have not placed a note but I will soon! It is near Notre Dame cathedral and easy to find (Metro: Saint-Michel Notre Dame).  This is a wonderful bookstore that will suite all your reading needs.

WHSmith
I have also found the English bookstore WHSmith. If you have been to Great Britain you should know it. WHSmith has great travel guides, magazines and bestselling book on the first floor. On the second floor there is a great collection of  kid/tween/teen books. You can also find DVD's, CD's and books for adults. WHSmith also has a wonderful collection of  English, American, Canadian and Scottish food. Their assortment has everything from baked beans to shortbread. WHSmith is a great place to find all your English books and food. I have purchased a lot of books (and candy) from WHSmith and have not been disappointed. I definitely recommend this English bookstore.

Vancouver
KidsBooks
On my last trip to Vancouver, Canada my grand-parents introduced me to a bookstore called KidsBooks. When I went in the bookstore I was so amazed to see all the different types of books. Sarah, a girl working in the bookstore, came to ask me if I needed any help finding a book. I told her that I didn't know what I was really looking for. She asked me a couple questions and then she went into the back of the store. Then she came back holding 14 books (I remember) and told me to read the summaries of each book. She had picked out some very interesting books. After I had read all the summaries I  finally decided on 4 books and they are all the top of my 'Best Book' list.
KidsBooks has a great selection of  books, movies and music. Now since I am not in Vancouver my grand-parents send me books from KidsBooks. KidsBooks is a absolutely wonderful bookstore and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Sarah, if you are reading this blog, thank you so much for all your help finding me the perfect books that suite my interests.

  1. Hey - so your grandparents were in the store the other day and told me that you were writing a book review blog and passed along the address. This is awesome!!

Thanks so much for mentioning Kidsbooks and me.

Right now we are all frantically reading advance reading copies of books that will come out in the fall for a big presentation we will be doing in the summer. I have read some really good books, some not so good and some that I have given up on almost right away!!

One book that has come out in paperback that I am excited about is Boneshaker by Kate Milford. I can't remember whether you can handle a little creepy or not, but this book is very good and reminds me of Neil Gaiman's (Coraline and The Graveyard Book) writing. See if your stores in Paris have it and check it out. Otherwise you could look it up on-line and let your grandparents know!!

Take care and I will stop in here to read your latest reviews.
    Thanks again!

  2. Hola,
I see you now have a further international correspondant. Sounds as though your grandparents will have to save up to do all the new book shopping.

  3. Dear Sarah,

Thanks for looking at my blog. A lot of the books that I reviewed are books that you suggested! You mention some books in your comment and you ask me if I could handle a little 'creepy' or not. I can handle a mystery but I can't handle creepy. I will, however, go and look at both books that you suggested and see if they are too creepy for me...

Also, good luck reading the books for the fall presentation. Some books are hard to get through and I think that every bookworm knows that.

Thanks again for your suggestions and comment,

    Gia

  6. Hi Gia,

I really like your blog. I am impressed by all your work and excellent writing.

If it is of interest I found when living in Germany that, in most cities, the hauptbahnhof has an international book shop where English books can easily be bought.

  7. Hey Nina,

Me too I love Shakespear and Co! You are right, I lot of people think that WHSmith is the only English bookstore in Paris and they forget about Shakespear and Co.

    Enjoy the reviews,

    -Gia

  8. Hey Gia,

I can't not believe how much work you've put in to this! I love reading reviews on book that someone my age wrote, it inspires me to do something like this! One book that I read and enjoyed a lot was "Are You There God Its Me Margaret" by Judy Blume, its and fairly easy read but is still amazing. Also, if you decide to reed "Are You There God Its Me Margaret", would you be able to suggest similar book that I may like?

    Love the reviews,
